The FJ Friday Feature Blog gives a chance for our candidates and clients to get to know our team better. This week's FJ Friday Feature speaks with Luke Cubbage who is an Executive Search Consultant who is based in our Manchester Office (HQ).

1. What initially got you into recruitment?

I was about to turn 30, I was not earning enough and in debt. I wanted to be challenged and wanted my life to be better than it was. So I went to an interview in town with another agency, where they did some real cringeworthy interview stuff which was done in a group, they asked you to bring something in and talk about why it was important to you and I had not brought anything with me, so I got my keys out and said they always “Helped to unlock the doors to life” they offered me the job but I basically never picked up the phone as it was not for me.

However, when I was there someone got talking to me about FJ and how they had a positive experience for them despite leaving recently and so I emailed them and 3 and half years later here we are writing this Friday feature.

2. What are your favourite things about working at FJ?

My favourite things about working at Finlay James are having the ability to implement ideas and structures that change the company and the culture from when I first started. Additionally, organising football on Wednesdays helped to bring a lot of the guys together throughout my time here and even helping to contribute to ideas around implementing a successful client success model which was questioned a lot at first, but when put in place now helps the business to manage the ever growing client list more successfully and to most importantly grow.


3. What goals do you have for the next 5 years?

Specific long-term goals are nice to have, and I am no different! I would love a house, get married, go on holidays and all that jazz.

Mainly though I don't want to look back on my life and think could I have done more with the opportunities that I had?

Did I give myself the best chance to succeed?
Let's face it no one said in 2015 I hope in 5 years’ time, I spend the whole year stuck in my house/flat not seeing my family or friends, so where you see yourself is always a moving question. Goals should always change to move in line with your own personal growth.

4. What you recommend to someone who is just starting up in recruitment?

Don't you dare quit!!!!!!

Agency Recruitment is a great job when it goes well, but it doesn't always go well! When it goes wrong it can feel lonely and it is more mentally challenging than a lot of jobs, especially with long sales cycles like we have in technology, it takes time to build back a pipeline. Therefore, you need to ensure you don’t continue to make mistakes as you will get found out if you do.

The key thing to remember is that only you can change what comes next. Every day you get to decide what you can be and how far you can go.
Because when you do get there, you grow far more from coming through the tough times than when it is all going your way.


5. Describe your perfect, non-work day.

A perfect non-work day would be going for a long walk followed by a Sunday Roast Dinner with my girlfriend Hannah and going for a walk after with my dog Archie.
