Lunch with...Martin Burnett

Today we took one of our Associate Directors, Martin Burnett, out for lunch to celebrate the ten year Anniversary of his working for Finlay James! We also asked him some questions to find out what makes him successful…

What is your proudest moment in business?

Getting through a recession and coming out the other side stronger.  A painful but invaluable experience.

Do you have a motto that guides the way you do business?

You’ll never walk alone.

As a sales person I believe that if you build long term relationships and look after your clients, over time they will look after you.  (Yes, Martin is a Liverpool fan…)

Which individual inspired you in your business life?

Sir Steve Redgrave.  Even though he had asthma he never gave up and it ended up with 5 gold medals.  His persistence inspires me professionally.

Describe your online profile. What social media tools do you use?

I love LinkedIn and have won lots of business on this platform over the years.  I do a bit on Twitter (am trying to get more into this!)

If you hadn’t become a successful IT Sales recruiter what would you have done?

I would be a Virgin.  Sorry I couldn’t help borrowing Peter Crouch’s line!

How do you think business will be different in 10 years?

My IT sales experience makes me think that most solutions will be cloud based.  I also think that face to face business meetings may be much fewer, which I think is a shame.

What do you always have with you?

Iphone, wallet, keys…

Tell us one tip which would be invaluable to our business lives…

Don’t give up.

What is the most inspirational book you have ever read?

Steve Redgrave’s autobiography.  It is the only book I have ever read which genuinely resonated and inspired me.

Do you prefer to dress up or dress down for work?

Up.  It gets me ‘in the zone’…

What is your biggest business asset?

Bouncebackability!  All sales people need this!

At what time of day are you most productive?

First thing.  I think that one of the reasons I have done well over the last ten years is that you can generally find me in the office working from 7.30am or earlier.

What is your drink of choice at work?

Coffee.  With milk.  2 sugars (demmerarra).
